Chapter Thirteen

MAURICE “MAINO” PIERCE

Somberness lingered in the crowded church as I approached Winter’s pink casket holding my baby girl, who was sobbing uncontrollably on my chest. I didn’t want her to attend the funeral service because she was still having a hard time processing her sister’s death, but she deserved to pay respects to her mother. Looking down at that stupid bitch, I didn’t feel an ounce of remorse for taking her life. She crossed me too many times. A slight smirk tugged at my lips as I placed a single rose on top of her cold body before approaching Commissioner Wyatt. He was sitting in the front pews playing the role of the grieving father over the sudden loss of his only daughter. The medical examiner, who examined Winter’s body, said the cause of death was accidental drowning due to intoxication, but we knew the truth. When Nova reached for her grandfather, he stood up and gave her a long hug.

“Thank you for coming to show your respects, Maino.” He firmly shook my hand.

“She was the mother of my daughter. I had to show my face.”

“Winter had a lot of demons, but she was still my baby girl. I’m glad she is at peace.” He sighed.

Nodding my head, I patted him on the back before picking up Nova again, who wrapped her tiny arms around my neck. I chose to sit in the back pews and held my princess close throughout the entire service. When the pastor stood at the podium and announced it was time to close the casket, I figured it would be too much for Nova, and we left to get into our limo that was parked outside the church. Morgan was sitting inside waiting for us. She didn’t think it would be a good idea to attend the service because of her and Winter’s toxic history. Nonetheless, she wanted to be supportive of my baby girl and rode with us.

“How was the service?” Morgan asked as she pulled Nova to her chest for a hug.

“It was alright. We paid our respects and now it’s over.” I was nonchalant.

“Ms. Morg, my mommy is in heaven with my sister, right?” Nova asked innocently.

Morgan looked at me with her glossy eyes, before answering. Even though she knew I had to kill Winter because we would never get any peace, it didn’t stop her from feeling bad for Nova. That was her little homie. She loved her to death.

“Yes, she is, baby girl.” Morgan kissed Nova’s temple.

The air got thick with sadness and I changed the subject.

“Do you want to eat out or eat at home?” I asked Morgan.

“Let’s make pizza from scratch at home. I think that would be fun to do as a family.” Morgan gave a faint smile.

“We can do that, Morg.” I kissed her temple.

“Yayyy, we are gonna make pizza!” Nova waved her arms with excitement.

I let the limo driver know to take us to the grocery store as Morgan turned her head to look out the window.
